Pneumatic vs Hydraulic Adjustment Mechanisms:

The lift mechanism is called pneumatic, as it is controlled by two nitrogen gas cylinders. Hydraulic piano benches operate on the same principle, but use oil-based cylinders. By turning the knob halfway the cylinders are activated and the bench will go down if you are sitting on the bench, and if there is no weight on the bench it will raise up. Please note average weight required for the mechanism to work is 115lbs., so a small child cannot adjust the bench down easily. You have to sit on the bench or help them by applying pressure on the cushion for the seat to go down. In general however, both are great options for your piano bench, with the pneumatic being the more common system found.

For those interested a more detailed explanation comparing the two adjustment mechanisms, both pneumatic and hydraulic mechanisms are used in adjustable chairs and benches, to provide height adjustability. However, there are some key differences between the two mechanisms.

A pneumatic mechanism uses compressed air to provide the force required for height adjustment. The mechanism typically consists of a cylinder that contains a piston and a gas or air chamber. When the user activates the lever or button to adjust the height, air is released from the chamber, which allows the piston to move up or down. This movement is what allows the chair to be adjusted to the desired height.

A hydraulic mechanism, on the other hand, uses a liquid, usually oil, to provide the force for height adjustment. The mechanism consists of a cylinder that contains a piston and an oil chamber. When the user activates the lever or button to adjust the height, the oil is released from the chamber, which allows the piston to move up or down. This movement is what allows the chair to be adjusted to the desired height.

In terms of performance, both mechanisms are capable of providing smooth and easy height adjustment. However, pneumatic mechanisms tend to be more common in adjustable benches as they are generally easier to operate and maintain, and they tend to be more reliable over the long term.
