Piano Bench Frequently Asked Questions

Jansen Piano Bench Finish Options: Mahogany, Walnut and Ebony

The Jansen benches are available in black, walnut, mahogany, red mahogany, white, and ivory finishes.

Trying to decide if you need a mahogany or walnut finish piano bench? In general, walnut is a flat brown, whereas mahogany has red and purple tones to it. To see samples of the finish colors, please visit our Jansen Piano Bench Finish Options webpage.

You can also email us some pictures of your piano, and we would be happy to offer a finish recommendation.

Jansen Mahogany vs Red Mahogany Finish

The standard mahogany finish is a brown with red and purple tints to it. Red mahogany has very strong red and purple tones to it. Red mahogany pianos are beautiful but rare, and the vast majority of pianos have a standard mahogany finish.

To see wood samples and examples of Jansen benches in these two finishes, please visit our Jansen Mahogany vs Red Mahogany Finish webpage.

Piano Bench Leg Style Options

Jansen offers nine distinct piano bench leg styles, carefully designed to complement the most popular piano cabinet designs — from traditional uprights to ornate grands. Whether you're matching straight square legs, spade legs, or brass ferrule foot styles, there's an option that blends seamlessly with your instrument’s look.

Each leg is crafted from solid hardwood maple and finished to match your selected bench color, ensuring a cohesive and professional appearance in any space.

Jansen Adjustable Piano Bench Mechanism

Setting the Jansen artist bench apart from all competition with regards to quality and durability, and unique to their line of artist benches, is the accordion style lift mechanism. Refined over the past 60 years, the silent, solid steel "Micro-A-Just" close-tolerance lift mechanism features precision, durability and convenient height adjustment from 18" to 21". Made of solid steel, it is the highest quality adjustment mechanism on the market, and is the only recommended adjustment system for situations where the bench will be frequently used and adjusted, such as schools, universities, churches, performance halls, etc. The superior accordion style design is not found in any other benches. Furthermore, replacement parts are available, so if years from now you begin to feel any wobble in the bench, a new set of bushings and shoulder bolts will have your mechanism back to knew.

To see it in action, watch the Jansen Artist Bench Adjustment Mechanism Video, which includes comparisons to the adjustment mechanisms of some of the leading competitors.

Jansen Leather Piano Bench Care

Jansen artist benches are upholstered using the highest quality genuine leather available, sourced for its durability, grain consistency, and luxurious appearance. This premium leather is designed to withstand daily use while maintaining its rich look and supple feel.

To keep your bench looking its best, follow our Jansen leather care and cleaning guide. The guide includes expert tips on protecting the upholstery from wear, removing spots or stains, and conditioning the leather to extend its lifespan.

Is Assembly Required for Piano Benches?

All piano benches on the market require you to attach the legs. Assembly is quick and easy, with all hardware included, and usually takes just a few minutes. The rest of the bench, including the seat and adjustment mechanism (for adjustable artist benches), arrives fully assembled and ready for use.

What’s the Difference Between Satin and High Gloss Piano Finishes?

Piano benches are typically matched to the finish of your piano. A standard satin finish has a matte appearance with a soft sheen that minimizes reflections. High gloss (also called high polish) features a shiny, clear-coated surface that reflects light and gives a mirror-like appearance (think of the shine on a freshly waxed car). Choose the finish that best matches your piano's look.

Not sure which finish your piano has? Feel free to email us a few pictures — we’ll help you find the best match.
